The winners of the Russian National Theater Award The Golden Mask were awarded in Moscow. The ceremony, which took place at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater, was broadcast online.
The musical Chess by Dmitry Bogachev's Broadway Moscow theater company (MDM Theater) received three awards in the "Operetta/Musical" category.
The Golden Mask for Best Actress went to actress and singer Anastasia Stotskaya (Florence Vassy); theater and film actor Alexander Bobrov won the Mask for Best Supporting Actor (Freddie Trumper); music director Evgeny Zagot was recognized as the best conductor.
Chess is an international musical theater hit along with The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables and Mamma mia! The authors of the musical are composers and vocalists of the legendary ABBA band Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and librettist Tim Rice - winner of Emmy, Oscar, Grammy and Tony awards, who created lyrics for the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar and the musical The Lion King.
The Russian production, now in its second season's run at the Moscow MDM Theater, has become a new page in the history of Chess. An international team worked on the performance: director Evgeny Pisarev, music supervisor John Rigby, author of the Russian text Alexei Ivashchenko, and others.
In the center of the plot of this large-scale rock drama is a story based on real facts from the biographies of chess champions. The musical tells about love, sports victories and political intrigues. Unique multimedia stage sets with an orchestra on the third floor of the structure, convincing acting, bright vocals, spectacular dances and unsurpassed music from the hit musicians of ABBA make Chess the main musical attraction in Moscow.
